Everyone Lies

In response to my post from last Thursdays

Everyone hates liars. No one likes to be lied to. In our lives and even in television shows, movies, and books we cant stand the liars. They are the worst. But, truth be told we all lie. You lie, I lie, we all lie. I really like to lie. It’s much easier than telling the truth, and it keeps me out of trouble. But if I can beg your honesty for a second, lying is always easier than telling the truth isn’t it?

Why? We all hate liars, that’s pretty clear, and we all lie, that’s more than clear (ask House.) So again I ask, WHY? Why is lying so much easier?

Over the past week I’ve become convinced that people lie because we haven’t fundamentally accepted the fact that we aren’t perfect. Now, before you give up and stop reading, hear me out. I know you’ll say “well I’m not perfect because I’m gay, I’m an addict, I’m a stripper, I’m a whore, or I’m a slacker.” You’re right, you’re not perfect, but when the pressure is own we all get a little self righteous about our life style. For example, I’m a Democrat and if I can embarrass myself a little, ill admit that I will lie in discussions with my friends to avoid admitting the faults of that particular ideology.

Maybe I’m off base, but I think if we accept the fact that we are by no means perfect, if we accept that we aren’t even fundamentally good, it becomes much easier to tell the truth. Why would you lie about your GPA? Well you lie about your GPA when you can’t accept that fact that you aren’t a great student.

I’ll post more on Thursday and discuss why it’s a wonderful thing not to be perfect, and why it makes us candidates for change.
