Last Night I Got Naked

I don’t really do new years resolutions. They don’t suit me very well. I’m convinced that human beings change very slowly and very subtly, so often new years resolution serve no further purpose than giving you something to tweet about.
All of that being said, something extraordinary happened in my life last night. My four closest friends and I sat down together, look each other in the eye, and asked, “what should my new years resolutions be?”
That last sentence should terrify you. Do you know what it means to look at someone and ask, “Please tell me what I suck at.” Do you understand how vulnerable that makes you? My groups of friends are especially terrifying because we are some of the harshest and most judgmental people around. When’s the last time someone looked you in the eye and told you to lose weight because they don’t wont you to die young? Whens the last time someone looked you in the eye and told you they know you are a habitual liar? Whens the last time someone looked you in the eye and told you that you drink way too much?
I don’t have a lot of insight to give you about this topic. To be honest, I feel destroyed, I feel decimated, but moreover I feel a sense of excitement. See your friends get to look at you from the outside; they aren’t trapped inside your neurotic brain like you are. They get to see your life from a more objective vantage point than you ever will. So while this exercise was terrifying and incredibly embarrassing, it was helpful. I was shown problem that I honestly had no idea that they were problems.
I promise I have more to write about last night, but it will take me at least a week to gather my thoughts. For now I hope this post serves you in some way, maybe even encourages you to ask people in your life what you should work on.
